Forty-Two Years of Impact
Over four decades we’ve proven that together we can make a huge difference. While we have yet to fulfill Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s dream of the blessed community, we have met many of our greatest goals.
Thanks to our visionary co-founders from around the world, we developed one of the first widely-used definitions of sustainability: ecologically sound, economically viable, socially just and humane, embodying our highest values in terms of how we treat people, animals and the planet.

Taking on Daunting Challenges
In response to the ongoing, horrific murders of George Floyd and other people of color, the climate crisis, the global pandemic and anti-democracy attacks, the Alliance re-evaluated our work in 2020.
We developed our innovative Campaign for Sustainability, Health, Equity and Kindness (S.H.E. Kindness). Its purpose is to bring about fundamental systems change through personal and organizational transformation, as well as impactful public policies.
We are furthering our successful efforts while supporting and amplifying the work of aligned groups to build a diverse, inclusive alliance of more than one million people and organizations.
We're working together to shift systems in four critical areas: education, business, government and public awareness & engagement. We have four programs that are addressing these challenges:
- Akepa Youth & School Program
- Business Program
- Policy Program
- Outreach and Communications for Impact
