Reducing food waste, enhancing food security, and strengthening communities with dignity
Freegan Food Foundation is a nonprofit organization based on Sint Maarten dedicated to reducing food insecurity by rescuing safe and nutritious surplus food, and making it available through a dignified, client-choice food market. We address two interconnected problems: persistent food insecurity among individuals and families, and large-scale food waste within the commercial food system.
Freegan works directly with food retailers, wholesalers and other suppliers to collect surplus food that otherwise would be discarded despite being suitable for consumption. This food is transported, sorted and offered through our client-choice market, where individuals and families experiencing food insecurity are able to select food according to their own needs, preferences, and household circumstances.
Our model prioritizes dignity, autonomy and respect. Rather than pre-packed distributions or one-size-fits-all aid, we provide access that mirrors a traditional market experience while reducing barriers to nutritious food. In doing so, Freegan strengthens local food security, reduces waste and promotes more equitable use of existing food resources.
In addition to addressing immediate food access needs, Freegan Food Foundation’s work is grounded in a broader commitment to strengthening long-term food security and economic resilience within our community. We recognize that food insecurity does not exist in isolation, but is closely linked to historic patterns of exclusion, inequality and limited access to economic opportunity.
Freegan therefore complements its client-choice food market with education and training initiatives designed to help individuals and families build capacity and greater self-reliance. These programs include practical education related to food purchasing, preparation and nutrition, as well as financial literacy and basic money-management skills. Through these efforts, participants are supported not only in meeting immediate needs, but also in making informed decisions that contribute to healthier households and greater financial stability.
Freegan also offers learning and skill-building opportunities that support increased earning power and economic participation. Our approach emphasizes respect, autonomy and agency, recognizing that lasting food security is achieved not only through access to food, but through strengthened knowledge, skills, and opportunities.
Across all programs, Freegan is guided by a commitment to dignity, equity and responsible stewardship of resources. By reducing food waste, expanding access to nutritious food, and investing in community capacity, Freegan Food Foundation works toward a more just and resilient local food system that benefits our entire community.
