KenyaBrain Youth Group is a community-driven organisation founded in 2011 and based in Kisauni Sub-County, Mombasa. The organisation is dedicated to environmental conservation, youth empowerment, and climate resilience, with a particular focus on coastal ecosystems and sustainable livelihoods. Brain Youth Group works closely with local communities, policymakers, and other stakeholders to design and implement practical climate solutions that respond to both environmental degradation and socio-economic vulnerability. The organisation primarily engages widows, girls, single mothers, and young people aged 18 to 35 from Junda Sub-location in Kisauni Constituency. By combining conservation with income-generating activities, Brain Youth Group aims to ensure that environmental protection is not only ecologically effective but also socially and economically viable for the communities most affected by climate change. The mission of Brain Youth Group is to foster sustainable development by promoting environmental conservation as an alternative and reliable source of income for local communities. Through innovative, community-led projects, the organisation creates employment opportunities while addressing critical climate challenges facing the coastal region of Mombasa. The organisation’s work centres on environmental education, ecosystem restoration, and sustainable livelihoods. A core area of intervention is mangrove restoration, focusing on the rehabilitation of degraded mangrove forests to restore biodiversity, protect coastal ecosystems, and enhance climate resilience. Alongside restoration, Brain Youth Group conducts extensive community awareness and education programmes to build local knowledge on mangrove conservation, climate action, and responsible natural resource management. In addition, the organisation promotes marine farming, also known as mariculture development, by supporting sustainable aquaculture practices such as fish and crab farming. These initiatives provide alternative livelihoods for coastal communities that traditionally depend on environmentally harmful activities. Beekeeping is also integrated into mangrove ecosystems, with 270 beehives established to support honey production, improve pollination, and strengthen local incomes. Brain Youth Group further engages community members in regular coastal clean-up activities to reduce marine pollution and protect ocean life. Since its establishment, Brain Youth Group has achieved significant impact. The organisation has successfully planted approximately 4.95 million mangroves along Tudor Creek, achieving a survival rate of 92 percent. The integration of 270 beehives within restored mangrove areas has contributed to both biodiversity enhancement and sustainable honey production. Extensive education and awareness campaigns have strengthened community participation in climate action and conservation efforts. Tudor Creek’s mangrove forest, which once covered approximately 1,641 hectares, has been reduced to about 215 hectares due to human activities such as fish bait digging and the effects of natural calamities. Brain Youth Group is actively working to reverse this loss through ecosystem restoration, sustainable livelihood development, and advocacy for responsible environmental practices.
