Empowering Public Good with Artificial Intelligence

Overview

MI4People is a global network of volunteering AI experts who collaboratively develop AI4Good applications. These applications are AI systems that help solve ecological, humanitarian, and social problems. Due to exponential scalability of AI, our projects can create enormous impact on delivery of public good at lower cost. All our projects are open-source, and our applications can be used by nonprofit for free.

MI4People was established in 2021 and is currently running 10 AI4Good projects. Till now roughly 150 volunteering AI experts, data scientists, ML engineers, software engineers, cloud computing specialists and other experts have contributed to our mission. These individuals come from all over the world, from USA to South Korea.
While our projects are complex, challenging and can need several years of development, the impact they can produce is huge compared to the costs and time investment and can help solve many important problems of this world.

Some examples of our projects:

  1. Marine Litter Detection via Satellites: Marine litter is a major ecological threat to marine ecosystems, human health (microplastic), and economy (tourism and ship traffic). While the problem is well known, it is extremely difficult to clean the oceans due to the sea currents that keep marine litter moving. Currently marine litter is identified by direct observations from ships or land. This observations become outdated very quick. Consequently, organizations cleaning the oceans cannot plan their cleaning routes efficiently. To help solve this problem we are developing an AI system that can automatically spot marine litter using public satellite images in almost real time. This system will be available for everyone and will help organizations cleaning seas and oceans to gather more litter and reduce their costs and CO2 impact.
  2. Artificial intelligence for Pediatric Rare Diseases: Children with rare diseases, the orphans of medicine, are disadvantaged in many respects: odysseys from doctor to doctor, wrong diagnoses and clinical mismanagement determine their lives. While children with rare diseases have the potential to be cured or to get their suffering reduced, majority of doctors cannot evaluate the vast amount of medical data required to find right diagnosis. Therefore, together with our collaborators we develop an AI platform to support, diagnose and treat children patients in a more efficient, targeted and individualized way. To preserve the highest standards of data security while working with very sensitive medical data, our platform is decentralized and designed in such a way that actual data remains in clinics.
  3. Improving access to quality healthcare in low-income countries: Majority of low-income countries do not have enough doctors. Especially severe shortage is present among specialist like radiologists and cardiologists. Many hospitals possess X-ray and ECG machines but have no specialists who can correctly interpret results from these devices. Consequently, patients often get wrong diagnoses and treatments. Therefore, we are working on two projects: AI radiology assistant and an AI cardiology assistant. These systems are able to identify various diseases on X-ray images and ESC diagrams with high accuracy (on the level comparable to professional radiologists and cardiologists). Both systems will be available for free for hospitals in low-income countries. These systems will enable local doctors to make better diagnoses and save more patients’ lives.

Our major costs are cloud computing, IT-infrastructure costs and expenditures for our staff who coordinates and guides the work of all our volunteers and ensures highest quality of our solutions.

How your donation can help:
Running 1 project for one year: ca. 10,000 USD
Running 10 projects for one year: ca. 100,000 USD
Running 100 projects for one year: ca. 1,000,000 USD

Of course, we are grateful for any partial donation 😊 Any financial contribution help us achieve our AI4Good mission.
