PROMOTING PLANT BASED FOOD FARMING AND DIET IN UGANDA
Kiyita Foundation is a community-based organization founded in 2019 in Uganda to empower women and girls in economic and social development by promoting sustainable plant-based food farming and diets. Despite farming being the main economic activity in Uganda, farmers remain very poor and unable to access farming skill training and opportunities. It has now been 10 years since Uganda started experiencing acute hunger, malnutrition, high cost of food, and infertile farmland. Farmers lack knowledge of how to use farming inputs without affecting the environment and humans, farming skills, and good quality agriculture inputs that support soil to produce organic food and increase food yields.
we designed a farming module with topics such as Mulching, crop rotation, intercropping, homemade organic fertilizers and pesticides, food Marketing, food and water harvesting skills, food storage skills, and plant-based diet guidelines and related support to help the community adopt veganism. Kiyita Foundation also provides capacity-building to women and activities that promote plant-based food farming and diets.
our goal is to achieve food availability, accessibility, and affordability to everyone, improve food systems, ecosystem stability, food nutrient adequacy, reduction of plant-based food waste and loss, and profitable farming.
since 2019 we have trained 232 women and girls in the above skills and we have been able to support 5% to start successful plant-based food farms and are passing skills to their employees and communities. we hope to train more than 100 women and girls this year 2024 due to the high demand for skills in rural communities.
