Los Angeles’ shelter dogs are running out of time, and City Hall is not doing enough to save them.
Our shelters are overcrowded. Foster programs and low-cost spay and neuter services are stretched thin. And the work of keeping dogs alive keeps falling to volunteers, fosters, and small rescues who are paying out of pocket. That is not a plan. It is a failure of leadership, and the dogs are the ones who pay for it.
For 25 years, Ace of Hearts has pulled dogs from LA County shelters on the day they’re scheduled to be euthanized and placed them in foster homes. In 2025 we took in 124 dogs, adopted out 112, and euthanized none. We now have 76 foster homes. We can’t do this alone, and we shouldn’t have to.
In January 2025, the Palisades fire destroyed our main facility and office entirely. We relocated to West Hollywood and kept pulling dogs from shelters, because the dogs couldn’t wait for us to recover. We are still rebuilding, and every dollar spent replacing what we lost is a dollar not going to the next dog in a shelter.
Your gift pays for veterinary care and supplies for the dogs we pull from shelters. A monthly gift lets us plan ahead and say yes to the next dog.
Give today. Then tell Los Angeles’ leaders that shelter dogs deserve better: more funding for shelters, real support for foster programs, and help for families who can’t afford to keep their pets.
